Gemstone Bulldogges™ · Guardian Home Program
A family-centered pathway for exceptional dogs, trusted families, and the future of the Olde English Bulldogge.
At Gemstone Bulldogges, our Guardian Home Program allows exceptional dogs to live as cherished family members while still contributing to the future of our breeding program. Rather than keeping multiple breeding dogs in a kennel environment, we believe they deserve couches, family vacations, bedtime snuggles, children to grow up with, and a home of their own.
Please note: Not every dog placed in a guardian home will ultimately be used in our breeding program. While we carefully select puppies with strong potential in health, structure, temperament, and pedigree, every dog is an individual. As each dog matures, we evaluate physical traits, confidence, personality, emotional well-being, and overall desire to participate in the program. Our commitment will always be to the well-being of the dog first.
A guardian home is a carefully selected family home where a Gemstone Bulldogges dog lives as a loved family member while remaining connected to our breeding program.
Guardian homes help us preserve and improve the Olde English Bulldogge while ensuring each dog receives the individual love, attention, routine, and family life they deserve.
These dogs are not kennel dogs. They are family dogs first.
We are searching for families who want to become part of the Gemstone Bulldogges family and who understand the importance of trust, teamwork, communication, and lifelong commitment.
Many guardian families become close friends. We celebrate milestones together, support one another, and work as a team to give these dogs the very best life possible.
The Guardian Home Program is built on clear communication and shared responsibility. A detailed Guardian Home Agreement outlines all responsibilities, expectations, timelines, and program-specific terms.
Exact financial responsibilities, timing, ownership terms, retirement requirements, and veterinary decisions are defined in the signed Guardian Home Agreement.
Male guardian dogs typically become eligible for consideration in the breeding program after maturity, health testing, PennHIP evaluation, genetic evaluation, and review of temperament and structure. This often occurs between 12 and 24 months of age, depending on the individual dog.
When a breeding opportunity arises, the male may need to visit Gemstone Bulldogges or an approved veterinary/reproductive professional for collection appointments, brief stays, or breeding-related arrangements. Natural breeding may be considered only when appropriate and approved by the program.
Guardian families must keep male guardian dogs intact until retirement and must prevent unauthorized breedings.
Many male guardian dogs retire from the breeding program around 4 to 5 years of age, though retirement timing depends on the individual dog, health, program needs, and the Guardian Home Agreement.
After retirement, ownership may transfer fully to the guardian family according to the agreement. Neutering may be completed if desired or required by the agreement. The dog remains exactly where he belongs — with the family who loves him.
Female guardian dogs enter the breeding program only after passing appropriate health testing, completing PennHIP evaluation, receiving genetic testing review, and reaching physical and emotional maturity.
Most females are considered after at least two heat cycles and typically between 18 and 24 months of age, depending on the individual dog.
During breeding arrangements, a female may stay with Gemstone Bulldogges briefly. She may then return home to her guardian family for much of her pregnancy when appropriate.
As whelping approaches, she typically returns to Gemstone Bulldogges approximately 1 to 2 weeks before her due date. She remains with Gemstone Bulldogges for delivery, recovery, and early puppy raising.
Because Gemstone puppies may stay with the program for extended development before going home, mothers receive support during the most demanding stages of motherhood while puppies receive the socialization, handling, and developmental experiences that are central to the program.
Most female guardian dogs retire after up to three carefully planned litters. Retirement decisions are based on the individual dog, overall health, emotional well-being, recovery between litters, veterinary guidance, and what is best for the dog.
After retirement, ownership may transfer fully to the guardian family according to the agreement. Spaying is completed when appropriate or required by the agreement. She continues living the life she already knows and loves.
While many Gemstone guardian families are located in South Dakota and surrounding states, we may be willing to work with families farther away when the fit is right.
Guardian homes have ranged from local families to families several states away. If a family feels deeply aligned with the program but is concerned about distance, they are welcome to reach out.
When the right family and the right dog come together, teamwork makes the dream work.
Being selected as a Gemstone Bulldogges Guardian Home is truly a privilege.
We are intentional about the dogs we place and the families we choose. Not every dog enters the Guardian Program, and not every family is the right fit. The success of the program depends on trust, communication, shared values, and a genuine love for the breed.
When a family joins the Guardian Program, they are not simply receiving a puppy. They are becoming part of something much bigger. They are becoming part of a legacy.
Together, we are helping preserve, protect, and improve the Olde English Bulldogge for future generations. Every health test completed, every training milestone achieved, every carefully planned breeding, and every puppy raised with purpose contributes to that mission.
Many guardian families begin as applicants and become lifelong friends. We celebrate accomplishments together, support one another through challenges, and share in the joy of watching these dogs grow and thrive.
For the right families, the Guardian Program is an experience unlike any other — one built on trust, teamwork, and a shared commitment to pursuing excellence in the breed.
The Guardian Home Program allows Gemstone Bulldogges to maintain a small, intentional breeding program focused on:
Most importantly, guardian homes allow our dogs to spend their lives exactly where they belong — being loved by their own families.
At Gemstone Bulldogges, we are not simply raising dogs. We are building relationships. We are preserving bloodlines responsibly. We are creating future generations with purpose. And we are building a community of families who love these dogs as much as we do.
Because preserving a breed is not something we do alone. It is something we do together.
If you feel aligned with the Guardian Home Program and believe you could provide the right family life, communication, and commitment for a Gemstone Bulldogges dog, we invite you to begin the conversation.
A detailed Guardian Home Agreement outlines exact responsibilities, timelines, breeding-related expectations, transfer of ownership, retirement, and program-specific terms. Wording such as “typically,” “may,” “when appropriate,” “according to the Guardian Home Agreement,” and “depending on the individual dog” is used throughout because each placement is individual and program-specific. Nothing on this page is a guarantee of breeding use, health, temperament, fertility, puppy outcomes, or training outcomes.
